College of Life Science and Technology (CLST) was originally established in 1985 as an Experimental Center of Guangxi Agricultural College. More than a decade later, CLST was re-established in September 2003 through integration of Biotechnology Experimental Center (BEC) from Guangxi Agricultural University, Institute of Food and Fermentation Engineering affiliated to Industrial Analytical Laboratory Center of Guanxi University, Biotechnology Teaching Department as well as Bioengineering Teaching Department from College of Biotechnology and Sugar Engineering of Guangxi University.
CLST is composed of Department of Biotechnology, Department of Biosicence and Experimental Teaching Center of Life Science. To date, There are 76 faculty members (25 professors; 24 associate professors), from which 44 members receive PhD. Among them, there are 22 and 45 PhD and MD supervisors, respectively. Notably, many high-level scholars affiliate to CLST, such as the winners of National Outstanding Youth Science Fund, Yangtze River Scholar, National ‘Millions of Talents Project’, ‘Bagui’ Scholars of Guangxi, Education Ministry's New Century Outstanding Talents Subsidy Program, and Baogang Outstanding Teachers. There were 565 undergraduate students, 77 doctoral candidates, 360 graduate students and 11 postdoctoral researchers.
There are currently Ph.D. and Master's degree programs in biology, Master's degree programs in Biological Medicine and Bioengineering, and Bachelor's degree programs in Biotechnology and Bioscience. Of them, biotechnology is national first-class undergraduate specialty. The College has an national key cultivation discipline (Microbiology), the Guangxi Key and first-class discipline (Biology), Doctoral and Master’s degrees authorization program of first-level discipline (Biology), Professional degree authorization programs (Biological Medicine and Bioengineering) and postdoctoral research station of Biology.
CLST is constructing and running based on many national and provincial research and teaching platforms, including State Key Laboratory for Conservation and Utilization of Subtropical Agro-bioresources, Cellulose Processing Laboratory of National Research Center of Non-grain Biomass Energy Engineering Technology, Guangxi Key laboratory of Subtropical Bioresource Conservation and Utilization, Virtual Simulation Experimental Teaching Center of Bioscience and Bioengineering of Guangxi, and Guangxi Research Center of Microbes and Enzyme Engineering Technology.
In the recent decades, research and teaching of the college have bene supported by more than 100 projects, published many high-quality papers in international famous journals, such as Nat. Commun., PNAS, Plant Cell, Genome Res., Nucl. Acids Res., Plant J., and obtained more than 100 patents for invention. The college has won one National Science and Technology Progress Award (Second), five Guangxi Natural Science Award (2 First; 1 Second; 1 Third), 12 Guangxi Science and Technology Progress Award (2 First; 6 Second; 4 Third), and two Guangxi Technological Invention Award (Second). In addition, the college has an national bilingual teaching demonstration course, two Guangxi-level Excellent Courses and one Guangxi-level Teaching Team, and also won the prizes including one National Teaching Achievement Award (Second), and eight Guangxi Teaching Achievement Award (2 Outstanding award, 1 First-class, 3 Second-class, 2 Third-class).
The college will aim to become a first-class research-oriented college with distinct characteristics of subtropical biological resources, which exhibits distinctive discipline direction, prominent professional structure, reasonable layout of cooperative school running, and combination of biological theory and applied research.
